Per his application for pension, WIlliam C. Sparks stated the following:
While he was a prisoner of war at Canton, Tenn., in March 1863, he was struck in the right eye by a comrade snappin on an old coup (?) and a piece flying into his eye. The injury eventually destroyed his sight in that eye. He wsa treated in the Rebel Hospital at Canton, Tenn.
