BARONY OF STANLEY
I. 1. THOMAS STANLEY, of Lathom and Knowsley, Lancs, son and heir. He was born in or before 1405. In 1430/1 he was a knight, and Lieutenant of Ireland; and so continued (described as King's knight) until 9 November 1436, or later. On 6 December 1437 he was appointed constable of Chester Castle; and on 26 April 1439 he was granted, during good behaviour, the offices of Controller of the Household, Chamberlain of North Wales, and (with another) Forester of Macclesfield. On 1 December 1443 he, with the Earl of Suffolk, had a grant in survivorship of the office of justice of the cos. of Chester and Flint and of North Wales; and on 11 December 1448, with the same, had a grant of the office of Chief Steward of the Duchy of Lancaster. On 2 April 1450 he was appointed with others to be warden of Calais, &c. In 1451 the Commons petitioned for his removal from the Court. In 1455 he is described as Thomas Stanley, knight, Lord Stanley, the King's Chamberlain. He was summoned to Parliament 15 January 1455/6 by writ directed Thome Stanley militi domino de Stanley, whereby he is held to have become LORD STANLEY. Nominated K.G. before 13 May, installed 14 May 1457. He married. Joan, daughter and coheir of Sir Robert GOUSHILL of Hoveringham, Notts, by Elizabeth, widow of (i) Sir William DE MONTAGU and (ii) Thomas (DE MOWBRAY), 1st DUKE OF NORFOLK, daughter of Richard (FITZALAN), EARL OF ARUNDEL. He died 11 February 1458/9. Joan survived him. [CP 12[1]:250-1]
